How to Play

What is 2048?

2048 is a number puzzle where you merge matching tiles on a 4×4 grid to build the 2048 tile. When it came out in 2014, its simple rules (you can learn them in 30 seconds) and deep, think-ahead strategy made it a hit around the world. Every time you slide the tiles up, down, left, or right, a new 2 or 4 appears, and when the board fills up and nothing can move, it is game over. The bigger the numbers get, the more satisfying the chain merges feel, and after 2048 you can keep going for 4096, 8192, and beyond. This browser version of 2048 needs no download or sign-up - just play with your keyboard on PC or by swiping on your phone.

Play 2048 Free in Your Browser (No Download)

This 2048 game runs for free right in your web browser - no app to install and no account to make. The site is ad-supported, so there are no fees or paid items. It follows the same 4×4 rules as the original 2048 puzzle, so if you just want to play regular 2048 right now, this is it.

On PC you use the arrow keys or WASD; on a phone you just swipe. There is a one-move undo and a bigger 5×5 board too, so once you get the hang of 2048 you can change things up. Your best score is saved on your device, and if you submit it to the leaderboard you can see how you rank against everyone.

Tips and Tricks for a High Score in 2048

  • Keep your biggest tile in a corner: Put your largest tile in one of the corners and try not to move it.
  • Stick to two directions: Mostly use just two directions (for example, down and right) so your board stays tidy.
  • Line up the edge row: Keep the row by your corner sorted from biggest to smallest so tiles merge one after another.
  • Avoid the opposite direction: Moving away from your corner can wreck your setup, so save it as a last resort.
  • Merge before the board fills up: When empty squares run low, pick moves that merge tiles to open up space.

    A. Yes! Try Fruit Merge, where you combine tiles, or the number puzzles Sudoku and 15 Puzzle. All are free to play.
